Advent 2017 at Grace Church

A new church liturgical year began December 3 with The First Sunday of Advent! Advent is also a time of spiritual preparation and anticipation. All are invited to participate fully in the season with the following events and activities.

Advent Wreath Making

Sunday, DECEMBER 3 :: 9:30 - 10:30 AM

On Sunday, December 3, parishioners of all ages gathered to make Advent wreaths together from 9:30-10:30 AM in the Parish Hall.

Blue Christmas Worship

Sunday, December 10 :: 6:00 PM

A Blue Christmas service was offered on Sunday, December 10 at 6:00 PM in the chapel. This service remembers that the holiday season can be painful for many, and offered a time for reflection and acceptance, and healing and hope in times of darkness.

Advent Lessons & Carols

Sunday, December 17 :: 6:00 PM

This beautiful service, an Anglican tradition, is meant to help us prepare for Christmas. Scripture lessons were read and Advent carols were sung by the choir and the congregation. This year, the choir highlighted works by Beibl, Bruckner, Goldschmidt, Ord, and Pilkington.

Candlelight Café

Wednesdays :: 5:30 PM

The very popular Candlelight Café returns on Wednesday evenings. Parishioners are encouraged to come relax in Grace Church’s Candlelight Café during Advent!

A Week of Space and Prayer

Monday, December 18 - Friday, December 22

It is quite typical for a parish to have an Advent retreat day, a time where folks can come together to reflect more deeply on the richness of this critical season of anticipation, as we prepare our hearts for the miracle and blessing of Christmas. These times are fruitful, to be sure.

This year, I wondered if we might approach this Advent space of reflection in a different way. Rather than focus all our attention and planning on one Saturday retreat, what if we took advantage of our campus and fostered an entire week for prayer and reflection. Before you think that I expect anyone to be here for five straight days, let me explain!

From Monday, December 18 to Friday, December 22, we will open the nave, chapel, and parish hall as an offering to the community. We will gather in the chapel each day for Morning Prayer at 8:30 AM, Noonday Prayer at 12:10 PM, and Evening Prayer at 4:30 PM. These daily offices will structure our day together as a community. The entire space will be made available for folks who just want a space to come and sit during the day. Perhaps you have reading to do, work to do, writing to finish-(sermons to write!). Perhaps you are finishing Christmas cards. Or you want to knit.

It will be a space of silence, of quiet conversation, of prayer, of reflection. We will be able to experience the tower bells marking time throughout the day, as well as Will coming in to rehearse in the loft. Daily life...daily rhythm. No stress. No program. Nothing to prepare, other than our hearts.

Come and go as you need. If you need to take a break from work to come and look at an icon, it's here. If you want to bring the book you're exploring for Advent and sit on the couch in the Greeting Area, it's there for you. We'll open the doors at 8:15 to prepare for Morning Prayer, and we'll lock up at 5:00 after Evening Prayer.

I wonder what this will be like for us, to share time and space in this place. To experience an actual dynamic of monastic life within the daily rhythms of our parish week.

If anyone wants to share or help with lunch, just let me know. Above all, come and share. Come and breathe. Come and listen, pray, and wait for God to show up.

Laying on of Hands for Healing

Sundays :: 10:45 AM

Laying on of Hands and Prayer for Healing is offered at the 10:45 AM service every Sunday during Advent. Parishioners with concerns to be lifted up in a sharing, loving fellowship are invited to stop by one of the teams in the side aisles after communion.

Chapel Open

The chapel is open for personal quiet time, prayer, and meditation from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday.
